Molly Anathan Works on Paper (acrylic & mixed-media on paper) June 19 - July 1, 2009
I have always been an artist. Growing up in the Midwest, I remember constantly wanting to "make things". I had colored pens and pencils by my side, and lots of paper. Often having to relocate because of my father's work, I continued my interest in art and found the most safety and joy in my art classes. I graduated with a BFA from Trinity College, and was granted the "Friends of Art" award. During that time, I also worked with inner-city youths to teach them a better way of dealing with feelings of frustration and anger through art expression. By cultivating a receptive mind, I'm inspired to open myself to an energy that flows through me and onto my canvas, paper, or whatever material is at hand. My prints and paintings are rarely planned in advance, so I usually start by simply mixing the colors, which I find to be a meditation in itself. There is solitude in my works; I would like the viewer be absorbed and transported into the images that I create. My recent works flow from a visceral process that has emerged from personal experience. My work had been accepted for five juried shows at the Provincetown Association and Museum, and I have also shown at Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill. My work was also hung at The "I Love Provincetown" exhibit. May of 2006, I had a solo show for the grand opening of the Vixen Bacchanal Wine Bar. I had a second showing there the following year. Some of my earlier works were hanging in the Provincetown Realty Group office. My art has been auctioned off for benefit of the AIDS Support Group of Cape Cod, Castle Hill, Fenway Community Health, and more. I was a Studio Manager at the Pamet Building at Castle Hill, and continued to learn and grow artistically through the mentors and students that I met there. Since moving to Portland, Maine, I have been showing at my work at the Sylvia Kania Gallery; an artist cooperative.
