One of my favorite things about going to my studio is not knowing what will emerge by the end of the day. It is a place where I can take risks and the only thing at stake is more exciting artwork! In making 'mistakes' I stumble on new discoveries which help me to evolve as an artist. I rarely think of a piece as finished, each experiment is a stepping stone which leads me to the next piece. This unfolding parallels the challenges and rewards of being an artist and mother of three daughters and is part of what I try to capture in my work.
I am currently exploring the figure and the ways it can express something about our humanity. I don't have a particular image in mind when I begin, the intuitive marks I make inform what I will do next. I draw from memory with lots of gestural movements at the beginning phases of developing a picture. The surprise of what emerges is what motivates me to keep exploring the endless possibilities of what can happen in the studio.
This past May I was living in Provincetown and had a studio at the FAWC while in residence for my MFA with MassArt. I spent many hours walking in the dunes to absorb the beauty and contemplate all that I have been learning about the rich artistic history of this place. These mono prints are a morphing of memories of this landscape with places and a time that are gone but live in my imagination.
