"Wild Geese"

This work is inspired by the seasonal migrations of Canada geese, and a traditional quilt pattern that suggests both individual flying bodies and the V-shaped formation of the migrating flock.

The banners are silk, colored with natural dyes, lined with cotton muslin. The dyes (except for cochineal, which comes from an insect, and the mineral iron) are extracted from plants, some exotic and some as familiar as onion skins and teabags. Those used here, their geographic region of origin, and the colors they produce, are:

Cochineal - South and Central America - fuschia, pink

Cutch - Southeast Asia - brown

Logwood purple - South and Central America - purple, lavender

Logwood gray (logwood purple with iron added) -- gray

Madder - Middle East - red-orange

Osage orange - North America - warm yellow

Tea - Asia, Africa - off-white, beige

Weld - Europe, North America - cool yellow

Yellow onion skins -- North America -- gold

Some colors are combinations of two or more dyes. For instance, the greens were produced by adding a little logwood gray to weld or osage. The dark blue-violet was made by overdyeing cochineal with logwood purple.

Zehra Khan and Tim Winn

3/20-4/2/2011 - Opening Friday, March 25, 5-9pm

Tim and Zehra make site-specific installations which merge their love of drawing, the handmade, nostalgia and discos.  Disco '94 is inspired by a birthday party Zehra had while living in Switzerland.

With no irony involved, dance parties were called 'discos', and the basement of her parents house was decked out with flashing lights, a fog machine and a disco ball.  Our disco is the dance floor of monsters and animals, a throwback to beloved songs and glittery youth.  A twice-removed, appropriated, bastardized, and anthropomorphized glimpse to the spirit of disco.  Akin to pop-out books, the drawings subvert the limitations of two-dimensions by suggesting three-dimensional forms.
