Marcus Waterman (1834-1914)
Marcus Waterman, born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1834, is often credited as one of the first professional painters to come to Provincetown to paint. Perhaps best known today for his Algerian desert scenes, Waterman discovered that the Cape light and sand provided an ideal background for his canvases. He could also save both time and money by traveling to Provincetown and dressing up models in costume here. Waterman established his Boston studio in 1875. After his marriage in 1908, “Mark” and his wife settled in her native Italy where they mostly remained until his death in 1914.
