Joseph Kaplan (1900-1982)
Joseph Kaplan, untitled (boats, buildings)
Joseph Kaplan, a New York and Provincetown painter and printmaker of landscapes and figure studies. Born in 1900 in Minsk, Russia, he studied at the Educational Alliance Art School (founded in 1914), as well as the National Academy of Design (in the 1920s), both in New York City. He exhibited widely, including exhibitions at the Corcoran Gallery, Audubon Artists, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, and the Provincetown Art Assocation. He was an important figure in the Provincetown art colony, living and working there for many years, and became an honorary vice-president and trustee of the Provincetown Art Association in 1955. His work is in major public and private collections.
