They were all painted in 1915 when she came to Provincetown to study with Hawthorne. Not a lot known about her. She died in 1917. There is a collection of her miniatures on ivory from c. 1915 in the Indianapolis Museum of Art.

Jane Jarvis was married to Captain Thomas Staniford Mumford who graduated from West Point in 1871. Jane was a miniature portraitist who lived in France, Holland and England while she painted and stayed abreast of the war. Most of her clothing was hand made expressly for her in Paris and in London. She was educated and very intelligent and came from a wealthy background. I believe that she was also a feminist for her day and age. The famous story about her is that she reversed the last two digits of her birthday (1879) to 1897 to make herself younger - as it was, she did not marry until she was nearly 40 which in those days would have
made her a spinster with some magic in her eyes.

CHARLES VYSE FIGURINE - LADY WITH BALLOONS 1921, RARE

Up for sale is a Charles Vyse Figurine of a "Lady with Balloons".
This figurine, or statue, belonged to my husbands grandmother, Jane Jarvis Mumford, who was an acclaimed miniature portraitist in her time. She was married to Captain Thomas S. Mumford who graduated from West Point in 1871. She received many awards for her work and traveled widely as a young woman. Later in life she joined her husband in the Arizona Territories where they both traded with the local natives.

The Charles vyse figurine was undoubtedly acquired during Mrs. Mumford's tenure in England. She was a great collector of many things, including stamps, coins and antique bottles as well as china figurines.

This piece has the "C" "V" interlocked withing each other on the bottom of the statue along with the date 1921.

This figurine is in supreme condition. It has no chips or nicks, has never had any repairs done to it and shows excellent workmanship to the face and body. It is absolutely beautiful. The colors alone are astounding. It also has a custom made piece of mahogany wood pedestal. I am sorry to say that i could not take photographs to do this piece justice. The face is just spectacular and as any charles vyse collector knows, it is based on an actual person.

There is some crazing, but it is to be expected considering the age of this piece, which i am guessing to be turn of the century. My guess is based on the age of Mrs. Mumford and when she might have purchased this item.

If you have questions regarding this figurine, please do contact me and I will make every effort to answer to the best of my knowledge (or lack thereof!)
I thank you for bidding.
